The cam world has its own vocabulary, its own lexicon. Nothing very complicated but a definition of the different terms can be a great help to understand the subtleties. We have grouped the main words below.
Model / host / camgirl:
The person who shows off live in order to perform a show. It is referred to as a host / camgirl when the model is a woman or a host / camboy when the model is a man.
Voyeur / Viewer / spectator:
The person who attends the show, whether they are active in the chat, see giving tips or not. A purely passive viewer (no tips or action on the chat) is called a lurker or freeloader. Because of the way they work, freemium platforms have a very large percentage of this type of viewer. It is difficult to find statistics on this subject, but we can estimate that there are about 90% of lurkers on these freemium platforms. This is quite normal and an integral part of their business model.
Cam site / platform:
Cam platform simply refers to the website used by models to broadcast their videos and where viewers connect to. There are several dozen: Chaturbate, LiveJasmin, MyFreeCam … (more detail in this article)
Token / token / credit:
The virtual currency used on cam platforms. The price of a token is not the same for viewers and models. The cam site taking its share, so it is more expensive for viewers than for models. For example on Chaturbate, 100 tokens cost $10.99 to the viewer while a model will get $5 for 100 tokens earned. For viewers, the price of tokens is often on a sliding scale. The more they buy, the cheaper the token.
Tokens can be used in several ways by spectators:
- they can be used to give tips to models during public shows
- they are counted by the minute during private shows
- Depending on the platform, they can also allow you to buy the videos or join the models’ fanclub
Tips/ Tipper/Tippers:
A tip is a tip left by the viewer to the models. On freemium platforms, these are the tips that allow the model to be paid and, in fact, the show to progress.
The tippers or tippers are the spectators giving the tips.

The moderator will deputize the model during the making of the shows by taking care of some tasks on the chatroom. He can as well animate it as moderate the users who need it, remind the rules see exclude the disrespectful spectators. He has a key role in the good realization of the shows.
